Gillespies Beach

A wild West Coast beach, this is a stunning coastal area surrounded by glaciers, ocean and rainforest. Take in the beauty of a gorgeous sunset whilst strolling along the desolate black sand beach.

A seal colony habitats the beach several kilometres up the coast – this is a 3 hour round trip walk from the road.

For a remote experience on a wild West Coast beach, drive to the road end (24km) on Cook Flat road, and walk through the sand dunes to the black sands of Gillespies Beach. This was the site of one of the many gold rushes on the coast and is steeped in history. The 40 minute walk from the carpark takes you to the lagoon on Gillespie's Point and an old gold miner’s track takes you around the point to the seal colony.
